W.D. DOTY, Ph.D., P.E.


Dr. Doty is a Senior Consultant to Pressure Sciences Incorporated specializing in metallurgy and welding. He is widely known for his research and publications in welding, in steel product development, in the notch-toughness of steels, and in failure analysis; and he is the co-author of the authoritative book entitled, "Weldability of Steels."

Dr. Doty received his Bachelor of Metallurgical Engineering, Master of Metallurgical Engineering, and Ph.D. degree in Metallurgy from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was also a Research Fellow. His graduate research was recognized through a national award from the American Welding Society.

As a consultant to Pressure Sciences, Dr. Doty has been involved in a number of failure analyses. He has also provided technical support in welding and metallurgy. For example, he has recently provided a detailed review of the welding procedure qualification, welder qualification, welding quality assurance procedures and materials selection for two 10 million gallon propane storage tanks built of A537 Classes 1 and 2 steel.

Dr. Doty joined the United States Steel Corporation in 1947, and served in various research and supervisory positions at its Technical Center. From 1958 to 1966 he was Chief of the Bar, Plate, and Forged Products Division; from 1966 to 1973 he was Research Consultant, Steel Products Development; from 1973 until 1983 he was Senior Research Consultant, Product Engineering; and from 1983 until 1985 Dr. Doty held the position of Senior Metallurgical and Product Consultant for U.S. Steel. There he was responsible for worldwide consultation with U.S. Steel Corporation's customers, divisions, and subsidiaries.

He received the American Welding Society's Spraragen Award in 1966 and he was elected a Fellow by the American Society for Metals in 1973. In 1984, he was elected a Fellow by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and named recipient of the ASME's J. Hall Taylor Medal. Dr. Doty was elected a Fellow by the American Welding Society in 1992.

His technical committee activities have been many and varied. He served as a member of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Main Committee from 1970 to 1990 and is now an Honorary Member. From 1967 to 1973 he served as Chairman of the Pressure Vessel Research Council. He is a member of the American Society for Metals, the American Welding Society, the British Welding Institute, the American Institute of Metallurgical Engineers, ASTM Committee A-1 (Steel), and is USA Coordinator for the International Standards Organization's Committee on Pressure Vessel Steels, ISO TC17/SC10 and Elevated Temperature Properties, ISO TC17/SC17. Dr. Doty represents the welding industries on the Advisory Board of the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors.

Dr. Doty is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Pennsylvania.
